He met her at a party. She was outstanding. Many guys were 1)after her. Nobody paid any attention to him. After the party, he invited her for coffee. Despite her surprise, she went along out of politeness.

They sat in a nice coffee shop, but he was too nervous to say anything, which made her really uncomfortable. Suddenly, he said to the waiter, “Could you please give me some salt? I’d like to put it in my coffee.”

The looks on their faces made him 2)blush, but when the salt was given, he put it in his coffee and drank up anyway. Curiously, she asked, “Why do you put salt in your coffee?” He explained, “When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea. I liked playing in the sea. The water tastes salty, like the salty coffee. Now, whenever I drink the coffee, its taste always brings back the memories of my childhood. I miss my hometown, as well as my parents who still live there.”

She was deeply moved, “A man who can admit that he’s 3)homesick must love his home and care about his family.” She talked, too, about her faraway hometown, her childhood, her family. That was the beginning of their love story.

Later she found that he was the one she had been looking for. He was generous, kind, warm-hearted and caring. She would have missed the boat if not for the salty coffee! So they married and lived happily ever after. Every time she made coffee, she would put in some salt for him.

Forty years later, he passed away and left her a letter which said:

My dear,

Please forgive my lifelong lie. Do you remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous that, instead of sugar, I asked for salt. I was too embarrassed to correct myself, so I just made up a story. I never thought that we would 4)hit it off. I really wanted to tell you the truth, but I was afraid that it would ruin everything.

Sweetheart, I don’t exactly like the salty coffee, but I’ve learnt to enjoy it. You are my greatest happiness. If I could live a second life, I hope I can have you by my side again, even if it means that I have to drink the salty coffee for the rest of my life.

Her tears 5)wet the letter.

One day, a friend asked her, “What does the salty coffee taste like?”

“It’s so sweet,” she replied.

She would have missed the boat if not for the salty coffee!

Miss the boat

l  He claims the government is missing the boat.

l  If you think you can do that, you have just missed the boat.
