Legend of the Chinese Zodiac

A long time ago, the god gathered(聚集)all the animals together and said, “I will choose 12 animals out of you to take turns(轮流) to head(掌管)a year of the cycle(周期), which will be called the Chinese Zodiac(十二生肖).”

The god and the animals decided(决定) to hold a river crossing contest(比赛)on January 1 of the Chinese lunar calendar(阴历). The first 12 animals that crossed the river and reached the temple(神殿) would receive their years according to their finish(完成结果). “I’ll be the first.” “I must win.” All the animals started to argue against(与……争吵) each other. Hearing this, the cat was a little upset(心烦意乱的). He said to his good friend rat, “I can’t swim. What can I do?” “Don’t worry! The ox(牛) is a good swimmer. We can ask him to carry us on his back,” said the rat.

On the contest day, all the animals set out(出发) very early in hopes of(怀有……希望) arriving at the temple before others.

All of them tried very hard to swim forward(向前). The ox swam the fastest. Suddenly(突然地), the rat on his back got a bad idea. He pushed(推) the cat off into the river. The poor(可怜的) cat swallowed(吞下) a lot of water.

The ox reached the river bank(河岸) and was set to(准备要) win. But the bad rat jumped off(跳下) his back and rushed to(奔向) the temple first. “I win! I am the first!” he said happily.

The rest of the animals arrived one after another(一个接着一个) in a few minutes later.

“According to our agreement(约定), the first 12 animals can take turns to be king of a year, and your names will be the name of a year. Let’s start from this year.” “Rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster(鸡), dog and the last one pig,” the god announced(宣布) the order. The 12 selected animals were all happy.

At that moment, the wet cat rushed in and asked, “Which place did I get?” The god answered, “You are too late. It’s over.”

Furious(狂怒的), the cat pounced(突袭) on the rat. Knowing that it was his fault(错误), the rat had to run away. From then on(从此以后), all the cats will chase(追赶) the rats and the rats have no choice but to run.
